Asphalt Paving Materials
Vulcan is a leading producer of hot mix asphalt paving mixtures. These consist
of construction aggregates, asphalt cement, additives and modifiers. The exact
mix of ingredients is customized for each project based on a number of factors,
including local weather patterns and expected traffic conditions. When expert
assistance is required, our Technical Services
Center routinely works with customers and specifiers to optimize mix designs.
Asphalt has a long history that dates back to around 6000 BC when it was used
in Sumeria in building ships. The first use of asphalt as a surface pavement is
thought to have occurred in Babylon sometime between 625 to 604 BC. Asphalt was
first used in this country around 1870. Today, it is the paving surface for
approximately ninety-four percent of our paved roads and highways. Asphalt also
remains a popular surface for parking lots, driveways, walking trails and bike
paths.
Vulcan owns and operates hot mix asphalt production facilities primarily in
major metropolitan areas of California and Texas. We also produce hot mix
asphalt in Arizona and New Mexico. In markets where we do not sell hot mix
